Privacy and Confidentiality: Clinical, Ethical, and Legal Considerations

Privacy and confidentiality set the parameters for an open and collaborative relationship between clients and healthcare providers. They establish a safe and trusting environment for the exchange of information that affects a patient’s health and well-being. This session will provide information and facilitate discussion on clinical, ethical, and legal issues regarding patient confidentiality.
After completing the ethics presentation, participants will be able to:
1) Demonstrate understanding of the positive ethics framework.
2) Recognize the differences between personal values, codes of ethics, organizational policies, and laws related to patient confidentiality.
3) Identify ways to minimize legal and ethical concerns regarding patient confidentiality.
