Evidence, Barriers, and Considerations for Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders remains underutilized, despite research demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing risk for overdose and promoting wellbeing. This presentation will review the evidence for available MAT for treatment opioid, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders. We will describe ways to breakdown individual barriers to MAT rooted in stigma. We will explore considerations for privacy, ethics, and confidentiality across different health care settings.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify options of MAT for opioid, alcohol and tobacco use disorder.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the evidence supporting the efficacious use of MAT.
  3. Describe ways to break down MAT stigma.
  4. Explore ethical, privacy, and confidentiality considerations for MAT across different settings.
